The rhythm dances and makes everything, small or big, atom or star, dance.
So the rhythm dances, these are the first two names given to our association.
And Man, who lives between these “micro” and “macro” worlds, is embedded and involved as well. The rhythm has multiple effects on him, particularly on the social bonds and the healing.
We would like to offer these benefits of rhythm through DRLST: the rhythm dancing within and among men, unifying them and making them feel good and in good health.
The DRLST is an international network of practitioners of rhythm (teachers, animators, socio-cultural workers, therapists) involved in supporting the social and therapeutic value of rhythmic practices. We are worried about the general trend of folding on ourselves or our own community, about the fragmentation of the social group and about an exclusively individual development. Rhythmic practices have been used since centuries in oral cultures because of their capability of establishing social bonds and of restoring a balance both inside the individual and among the group.
We think that sharing musics, songs and dances can create a deep connection among cultures, reactivating the desire of living together, offering a way to make interior barriers fall and to go beyond borders between both countries and beings.
We wish to make know and to promote exchanges between practices from different cultures, they could be ancient as traditional dances or modern as hip-hop or rap.
We work in the fields of education, culture and therapy, we organize international trainings, conferences and conventions and through this shared rhythm we try to build a human bridge between the self and the other, between people and nations in conflict.
We can give to the rhythm every kind of definition and think that it is present in every movement. But the rhythm we are talking about has a precise meaning: it is the coming back of a point of reference at regular moments of time between two opposite events, like the image of the heart beating in its alternation diastole-systole, or the breathing in its alternation inspiration- expiration. This rhythm that repeats opposite couples is called the cadence.
We can give to the rhythm every kind of definition and think that it is present in every movement. But the rhythm we are talking about has a precise meaning: it is the coming back of a point of reference at regular moments of time, cadences.
Concerning Man, this regularity is part of our bodily experience: we perceive the beats of the heart pulse, our respiration or the alternated cadence of our steps. But the rhythm organizes as well different levels, from the biggest to the smallest, that we do not perceive directly, as the rotation of the planets or the physiology of our cells. In fact, the Universe responds to the Law of the beat, that is a regular interval between two opposite events, like the image of the diastole-systole alternation of the heart.
Gilles Deleuze remarks that the Rhythm is “a vital force going over and traversing every domain... deeper than vision, hearing, etc.”. Oral culture shows the fundamental indivisibility among sensory modalities; the beating is heard, perceived, seen, sung, danced; it gives measure to songs and dances from oral cultures, included our traditional or modern one (rock, rap, hip-hop).
After a time of repression and decline, the pulsation is coming back in Western societies, stronger than ever, called “beat” and reinforced by the meeting with “primitive” cultures.
The rhythm concerns as well all the domains which constitute us: the body and the soul, the consciousness and the unconscious, domains that are under the law of pulsation.
The Ancients and the “primitives” knew it; they healed the individual and the group through the rhythm, joyfully connecting everyone to his body, to himself, to his memory, to the other, to the group, to the cosmos and to the sacred...
The DRLST, through traditional or mixed forms as Expression Primitive, wishes to offer to our lost world the benefits of this thousand-year old knowledge about the restructuring and liberating use of rhythm.
We work in the fields of education, culture and therapy, we train rhythm practitioners, we organize conferences and conventions at an international level.
We aim to support the sharing of rhythmic practices having oral culture features: they are based on the beat, on the regular pulsation, transposing the model of the heart pulse in singing, music, dance, poetry... The rhythm makes the whole being resonate through the vibration of the body.
The beat crosses the time: we can find it in traditional musics, songs, dances as well as in the ones of nowadays, big rock events, hip-hop dance, rap poetry...
The beat crosses space as well: it is universal, present in every corner of the world. We could even talk about THE oral culture, the orality, the immaterial heritage of humanity, to designate all the forms of expression transmitted through the body, since they pass through the rhythm and they do not need the writing.
Traditional forms of oral cultures are not only artistic. They have a social function: they create a bond among men, reactivating the desire of living together, offering a way to make interior barriers fall and to go beyond the boundaries between both nations and beings. The DRLST proposes to give a new value and to actualize this ancient knowledge through traditional or contemporary forms, like Expression Primitive. Expression Primitive is based on the structuring and liberating use of rhythm in order to set activities that establish, through the sharing of rhythm, a joyful and peaceful human bridge between the self and the others, between peoples and nations in conflict (dances for peace in Israel, for instance).
The DRSLT headquarters are in France, but there are branches in several European or Mediterranean countries. Our activities (classes, workshops) take place in France (mainland and Martinique), in Belgium, Greece, Israel...
